Fediverse

This community was essentially unmoderated for a while and I've been recently approached to take over moderation duties here. What I don't intend to do is to change any existing rules here but to enforce what has piled up in the moderation queue.

Last couple of months has been dramatic and there is a huge demand for ethical and safe social media. Even mainstream conservatives start to look for alternatives when US oligarchs wage hybrid warfare against their nation.

Pixelfed is seeing a surge in popularity. Anyone that's currently running one, have you run into any roadbumps, or have things gone smoothly? pixelfed.social has had scaling issues, but maybe it's easier if you're just federating to that instance instead of handling the load from user logins?

I am working on getting all of the information off of Facebook before I delete it forever. I used Tagged Photo Exporter to get all of tagged photos off of Facebook but I can't get videos I am tagged in to download.

Tumblr always suited me better than micro-blogging as there is no word count restriction (I can find brevity a problem) and you could have any number of blogs/channels for whatever topic was tickling your fancy at the time.

I really want a Facebook (the old Facebook timeline) replacement, but end-to-end encrypted, and decentralised so there's longevity.

I see this misconception a lot, so let's clear it up. The term "threadiverse" originally referred to the "threaded fediverse" — specifically platforms like Lemmy and kbin, which function similarly to Reddit with threaded discussions and link aggregation. Thus, Bluesky and Threads, on the other hand, are *not* part of the threadiverse because they follow the microblogging model, not the threaded link aggregation model.

This might sound wild or controversial, but has anyone thought about using the bluesky app and adapt it to work with the mastodon API? By this way making it easier for more people?

I thought one of the advantages of the Fediverse was to have one account but access to many services. Is this possible just not common? I already have a Lemmy account and Mastodon and I didn't want to start making more just to try out the other services.

I know this has been a regular topic of discussion lately, as Facebook users are looking for alternatives, but there is a harsh reality I think netizens of the fediverse need to acknowledge that will keep the majority of Facebook users locked in. That is the personal social graph that Facebook has built up for users over the years. No other site on the web has a way to find nearly anyone you have ever known, from high school friends to long lost family members. The reason for this is because of the format of Facebook being "you" on the web. Your profile is your name, your personal info, and it is even linked to your phone number and contacts, making social networking incredibly easy.

I have decided to write down the reasoning behind me not (yet) closing my Facebook account. Which I really want to do, but feel like I cannot (yet).

Today I noticed a huge wall of spam from UniversalMonk from 2 different accounts and didn't initially think much of it and blocked their communities but more spam came from different communities.

In the last few months i really gotten into the whole Fediverse thing, but i noticed that, despite it being the most popular Social Media Platform, there isn't a TikTok alternative. I know there is Loops, but it's not open source or federated yet, so it's not really an option. Why is that?

I would like to know if there's any (automatic) ways of translating the instances which are not my native language (English). I think many of them would be well worth participating in, or at least being able to lightly skim over.

It seems that the time for a facebook replacement is now, just based on the sense I have gotten. A lot of my friends, who would previously have clung onto facebook through all the terrible things it did over the years, are now looking for alternatives. The current consensus for most is joining Bluesky. I would love to be able to recommend them to the fediverse equivalent, Friendica, but it is nowhere close to ready for primetime.

I plan to end my Facebook account before January 19. I like the format and would like something similar in the Fediverse. Also, I need a good Facebook alternative I can show people when trying to convince them to leave Facebook.

I can see the !fallout@lemmy.world and join, but I can't see !fallout76@lemmy.world unless I search anonymous. Is it my instance? I've felt that finding communities is hard before. I've been looking for a place to post art requests, 3d model requests, chat about certain books, etc. I haven't found the communities, but I hear others refer to them as if they are there. Is my instance limited? How can I find out?

I get it - Google sucks for a lot of reasons. Unfortunately, they own the largest video sharing platform, and it's difficult to avoid. Many people opt to use and share links to 3rd party web interfaces that greatly de-enshittify the experience (Piped/Invidious), and I'm glad for that and that those projects exist.

i don't want to bring the big forum website that lead to the creation of lemmy (red**t), but that site lets you create posts for your own profile, like, it treats your own user wall as if it was a "subreddit" of its own and, if you don't have any followers or don't have the followers button enabled not a lot of people will see your post, but at least you can just sort of use it for posting interesting or casual stuff. lemmy should totally implement that please!!! can you do that on lemmy?? i tried but there's not a way you can do it, i've been trying so if you know a way of creating posts on your profile, please let me know thank you

Hello, I know that the fediverse contains many challengers to the walled garden approach of the main stream social media options. But, unless I miss comprehend, the fediverse isn't anything new, more a return to how things were in the the past. Case in point Newsgroups. Why aren't they mentioned in the same breath as Lemmy, kbin or Mastodon?

I've been running https://cupid.careers/ for some years already, and now I've got the first step into integrating with ActivityPub. The site now has a AP service which posts questions to the overall Fediverse and people can follow from their preferred AP platform.

The email analogy is really… boring.

I've been thinking about the potential for a decentralized, federated version of the new social media platform Neptune.

Do you know any Lemmy instances not federated with other ones, living by themselves? Do you know any interesting or creative use case for a not federated instance?

microblogging is something used on a much more personal level while i think forum style social media is mostly for looking for answers and posting things you do, but microblogging social media sites are for that too. also, this is not meant to be offensive, but i think that since mastodon has been in the works for like a long time, it looks more polished than modern websites, so that can be an advantage it has

hi i just wanted to ask a question which is the following umm why, why does when you do delete a post in profile your main profile does it not get deleted?? like it gets deleted but in the main profile it gets a little trash can symbol red symbol, red symbol on the right!! which means that it's been deleted but it still shows up in my profile history how can i delete it forever please?? thanks you so much!!!

If you go to !videos@lemmy.world and scroll you'll see some of the posts have a youtube thumbnail image, but not all.

Criteria: I'm looking for instances that are defed' with the Big 3 tankies (lemmygrad, lemmy.ml, and hexbear). I have no interest in trying to persuade my friends to create an acc and set up instance blocks before diving in, or dealing with the feedback when they run into the tankie brigade.

I currently use mbin and I like it because I like reddit-style social media, but for stuff from specific people and organizations microblog is sometimes better. I want to use the microblog part more (for example, make a post asking the Vivaldi account if there is any possibility of Vivaldi switching to a Firefox base instead of chromium. also I know it's not that easy no need to discuss that on this thread) but tbh I don't understand microblog stuff at all. in particular I want to know how I'm supposed to use @s and #s, and how I'm meant to interact with it. I know this seems kind of silly but I've never really used microblog-style social media until I got into the fediverse a couple months ago.

I'm trying to understand the way Mastodon works. Back in the day I started with IRC and then the many php-based forums and then reddit which led to lemmy. I never used twitter or similar platforms. My understanding (and this is where I need help) is that all of the above are topic-based, whereas Mastodon is person-based? What I mean is that on lemmy I subscribe to things based on topic and I don't really care about usernames or user profiles, I only care about discussing a topic. It seems to me like Mastodon is the opposite? You follow persons and what they might say about any topic? Is there something I'm missing here? Are hashtags close enough to sorting it by topic that it works just like a topic based platform? Is this difference inherent or just in my head because I don't understand Mastodon?
